Home Leak-Detection Checklist

Use this checklist to identify potential plumbing/leak issues in your home.

Faucets & Fixtures

Check every faucet.  Look for:
  • Drips after shutting it off
  • Water pooling around the bases
  • Loose or corroded handles/valve

Toilets

Inspect each toilet for:

  • Water around the base (bad wax ring)
  • Constant running or refilling
  • Wobbling that may cause leaks later

Under-Sink Cabinets

Open every cabinet under a sink.  Check for:

  • Dripping supply lines or traps
  • Dampness or moldy smell

Showers & Tubs

Turn on each shower and tub for a minute and confirm no leaks appear downstairs (if two stories).

Appliances

Inspect around appliances including dishwasher, refrigerator with ice/water line, washing machine, water heater and water softener.  Look for:

  • Drips behind or beneath
  • Wet hoses or loose fittings or valves

Basement or Crawl Space

Walk through looking for:

  • Puddles or damp concrete
  • Inspect sump pump (if present)

Exterior of the Home

Walk around and check:

  • Hose bibs (outdoor spigots) for dripping
  • Irrigation system

Water Meter "Leak Test"

This can help detect hidden leaks:

  • Make sure that all water is turned off in the house
  • Check the blue or red dieal on your water meter (located inside the house, generally in the basement)
  • If the dial is moving at all, something is leaking
