Residential Fence Regulations
The City Code outlines specific guidelines for fence construction on residential properties to ensure safety, visibility, and neighborhood consistency.
Fence Height Requirements
Front Yard: Maximum height of 3 feet
Side and Rear Yards: Maximum height of 6 feet
Permit Requirements
Fence Permit: Required before construction begins
Fee: No fee is charged for a fence permit application
Review Process: The Community Development Office must review and approve all fence permit applications
Corner Lots
Properties located on a corner lot may have two front yards. In such cases, any fence located between the house and the curb may be restricted to 3 feet in height, depending on the home’s orientation on the lot.
Non-Residential Properties
There are no height restrictions for fences on non-residential properties.
Application Process
To apply for a fence permit:
1. Submit a dimensioned plot plan showing:
- Proposed fence location
- Fence height
- Any easements on the property
2. Staff will review:
- Proximity to City services
- Compliance with recorded easements
Additional Requirements
Property Pins: It is the property owner's responsibility to locate property pins.
Underground Utilities: Before contacting the City, applicants must call Iowa One Call at 1-800-292-8989 to have underground utilities marked. This helps ensure a safe and well-planned fence layout.
