3rd Street SE Bridge Closed

posted in Public Works on February 18, 2015

Waverly’s 3rd Street SE bridge, commonly known as the “green bridge” has been closed to motorists and pedestrians.  On February 13, 2015, the City of Waverly’s hired certified bridge inspector, upon performing the annual bridge inspection, determined that the bridge and sidewalk needed to be closed immediately.

It was determined that the deteriorated condition of the trusses, specifically at the connection to the bearings, the sidewalk support brackets, and the two stringers in the south bridge span warrants closure of the bridge at this time.  The bridge is nearly 100 years old and has passed its life span by 30 years.  Click here to view a few pictures of the deterioration.

Motorist and pedestrians will need to utilize 1st Street SW and 7th Avenue SE as an alternate route.

In the meantime the council, mayor and staff will review the City’s options for this bridge.

A high quality of life, friendly and progressive merchants, and a college town atmosphere; this is Waverly, Iowa.
