The Waverly Community Gardens Committee is asking for service and community groups to dedicate one evening or morning this summer to help with the planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting of the community gardens.  The produce from these gardens, located between 5th and 6th Avenues on 2nd Street SW, are donated to the community free meal programs, Senior Center, Waverly Friends of the Family shelter, and with sufficient quantity, the NE Iowa Food Bank.

Typical work days would be from 6-8pm on Tuesdays or 9-11am on Saturdays but these can be very flexible.  The community garden supervisor will be present at all work days to provide guidance on what needs to be done and how to do it.  We have single species in our garden plots so care will be very easy after a brief orientation.

The Waverly Community Gardens is a volunteer effort coordinated by a local Community Gardens Committee and has funding support from the Guernsey Foundation and the Lutheran "Feed the Hungry" fund plus in-kind efforts of the Bremer County/ ISU Extension Service and the City of Waverly. The gardens are located on City owned property acquired with Federal funds after the flood of 2008.

The grand opening of the gardens is scheduled for May 19 so that or the week before will be the first volunteer dates. Garden cleanup will be sometime in late October.

Contact the Waverly Leisure Services office at 352-6263 to volunteer.
